Transition Services at Midland

ms_girl_workingThere is a certain amount of natural apprehension for parents as their children prepare to take on more independence in the adult world.

For the child with a disability, this developmental period can bring even greater concerns, for both students and parents. High quality, comprehensive transition services are particularly important for students with disabilities and their families, vastly improving the student’s likelihood of success upon graduation.

_DSF0058At Midland, we take our students’ futures seriously. Career awareness is introduced across the academic curriculum starting at the age of five through class lessons, field trips and guest speakers. By the time students reach formal transition age when they turn 14 – they are well-prepared to learn specific work-related skills, appropriate work attitudes and behavior, advance their skills, and engage themselves in the community. When they reach age 18, their work skills and independent living development can continue with participation in Midland’s Road to Work and the Community Program.

Midland’s Career Cluster Program, for students 15 and older, simulates work experiences in different career areas. Developing specific skill sets through direct instruction, and then practicing those skills across a variety of career settings, students learn to generalize important career and independent living skills. Thirteen career clusters are offered:

  • Art
  • Clerical
  • Community Living
  • Computer Skills
  • Food Preparation
  • Imprinting
  • Maintenance
  • Manufacturing and Merchandising
  • Mass Production
  • Recycling
  • Stepping Out
  • Stock Clerking

Midland’s Road to Work and Community Living program is a 2-3 year Work Skills and Independent Living Program designed for students who have completed their four years of high school core curriculum and graduation requirements. The program provides intense career preparation utilizing an integrated, community-based approach to instruction and learning. By the time that time comes, many have an effective awareness of their strengths, interests and abilities, and are ready to participate in their career planning, and making decisions about job placement, living arrangements, social lives, and more.
