Occupational Therapy
The focus of Occupational Therapy at Midland School is on developing and /or improving:
sensory processing; gross motor foundation; fine motor skills; perceptual skills; written communication skills (i.e. handwriting, computer); work related skills; independent living skills.
Midland has two occupational therapists that collaborate with teachers and parents on activities and strategies to maximize students’ performance and level of independence. Therapists recommend materials/methods and adapted techniques and equipment for staff to use with students in Academic Classes, Independent Living Skills, Career Education, Special Subjects or Job Placement sites. In addition, occupational therapists provide sensory materials and techniques for students that require a sensory diet. A Sensory Diet consists of activities done throughout the day to keep the student in a calm and alert state for optimal learning and interaction. Although these activities are incorporated into the regular schedule, when needed students may go to a sensory room to meet their specific needs. Therapists will also offer periodic educational programs for parents and to staff as part of the school wide comprehensive system of personnel development.
Midland occupational therapists provide direct services to students 5 to 14 years old. They also provide services for the Super Senior and Transition programs through an integrated model. In addition, therapists are available for all Midland students for consultation. The district CST contracts with private agencies to provide direct services to students 15 to 18 years old. Midland therapists act as a liason to share information with contracted therpists.
Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy is provided by the student’s sending district when it is recommended in the IEP.
Goals and objectives are determined by contracted physical therapists. Therapy rooms and equipment are available for physical therapists to provide therapy at Midland.
Health Services
Nurses administer medications, care for students who are ill or injured, provide health counseling, and perform health screenings. They also work with staff and parents to share medical information.
Speech and Language Therapy
Speech and Language Therapy is provided individually, in small groups, in transition speech groups for teens, and within classroom settings. Therapists address students’ speech and language needs as identified in their IEP. Therapy sessions focus on language content, form, and use as well as articulation/intelligibility, auditory attention and processing, oral-motor practice, augmentative communication, and compensatory strategies for speech and language deficits.
Counseling
