Jane Wilkie Day Habilitation Fund Drive
In 1960, The Midland School was founded in response to the need for a specialized educational program for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Thirteen years later, Jane Wilkie joined our staff as a teacher. During her early years at Midland, it became evident that there was a need for programs dedicated to job training and employment. This was particularly important for students as they transition from School to adult life. Now, more than ever, the opportunity to work is critically important to the individuals we serve and support.
Jane was instrumental in establishing an employment program now known as Midland Adult Services (MAS). Over the years, the MAS program has grown to include an employment program to provide job training and employment opportunities for individuals we serve and support. Subsequently, MAS expanded to provide community residential housing and recreational activities, and full community participation.
This July, Jane retired from Midland as the Director of Employment Services. Jane’s service to Midland and the developmental disability community has spanned a remarkable 44 years.
As a leader in services and supports to individuals with disabilities, Midland will be launching its Day Habilitation program. The goal is to expand the array of service options by providing meaningful personal development, community integration, and recreational activities to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program will offer classes and instruction in areas such as art, music, self-advocacy, travel training, life skills, continuing education, and health and wellness as well as other functional areas of learning.
We have launched a fundraising campaign in Jane’s honor to raise the $150,000 in startup costs for the new Day Habilitation program. The addition of a new program to address the needs of adults with developmental disabilities is a fitting tribute to Jane’s many decades of service to children and adults with developmental disabilities. The campaign will conclude with a plaque commemorating Jane’s lifetime of contributions to Midland.
Please join us as we celebrate Jane’s accomplishments and begin a new chapter for Midland with our Day Habilitation Program. I hope you will join us in making a contribution in Jane Wilkie’s honor and in support of the newest chapter in Midland’s 57-year history.
