The Knights of Columbus Council 6930 from Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Whitehouse Station, NJ raised funds totaling $1,800 through a weekend-long canister drive at the church and local establishments to support the programs and initiatives of The Midland School.
On June 2, two of the Knights, Joseph A. Olivo and Michael Horgan, Jr. came to Midland for a check presentation with Midland’s President and CEO, Shawn McInerney. The Knights had a chance to interact with some of Midland’s students and take a photo with them during the visit.
“The Knights of Columbus do outstanding work in the community and we are so appreciative that they included Midland in their mission to make a difference,” says McInerney. “We want to thank them for their charitable contribution and the time, energy, and dedication it took to collect such a large amount to give back to the students here at Midland!”
Students in The Midland School’s transition class program (designed for job training and career preparation) took a special trip to visit horses at the Mylestone Equine Rescue in Phillipsburg, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a safe haven for neglected and abused horses. The stable is a work site for Midland students who want to learn how to care for horses.
During the visit, the students presented Mylestone with a donation of $60 they raised selling greeting cards. “We have done this for the past 8 years and it is always a great experience,” says Mrs. Serrano, Midland’s transition teacher. “The students enjoy interacting with the animals and are proud to make a difference in the community.”

On May 16, The Affinity Federal Credit Union Foundation (AFCUF) came to Midland to pay more than just a visit – they granted Midland with a gift of $6,000! Dr. Lauretta Farrell, Executive Director of AFCUF, came to Midland to present the check to Mr. Shawn McInerney, Midland’s President and CEO.
“I know I speak for all of us at Midland when I say we are so thankful for the support of Affinity and the wonderful people there that make what we do here possible,” says Mr. McInerney. In addition to their generous financial support, Affinity has also given Midland students the opportunity to set up a weekly summer farm stand and sell locally-grown produce at their Basking Ridge headquarters for the past 14 years.”
“Farm Fresh Thursdays” as it’s fondly referred to, gives Midland’s older students the opportunity to operate a produce business and everything that goes along with it—helping customers, interacting with the public, and enhancing their money skills.
“Our students look forward to the experience each week and develop vital skills they’ll need to obtain competitive employment such as how to interact with customers, bag groceries, display merchandise, and navigate a corporate environment,” adds Mr. McInerney. “We cannot thank Affinity enough for their continued partnership and investment in the Midland mission. Affinity is a truly outstanding and caring organization.”
